About Our Trip

Some of the doctoral students selected to participate in the MSU College of Education's Fellowship to Enhance Global Understanding will be traveling to Botswana during the summer of 2012. With our trip leaders Mr. Tshube, Dr. Evelyn Oka, and Dan Schultz guiding the way, we will depart the United States on June 15th and return on July 1st.

Our trip to Botswana is designed to provide an intensive blend of academic and cultural experiences that allows us to better understand some of the challenges and opportunities facing Botswana’s children, youth, and families (such as the geography, AIDS pandemic, patriarchal societal structure, reliance on eco-tourism, and diamond industry), to learn about its system of social services, to provide insights into Botswana’s rich and complex cultural heritage, and to experience the magnificent wilderness and wildlife of southern Africa. We will likely visit schools, rural villages, urban centers, community centers, orphanages, and game reserves and meet with leaders in education, mental and physical health, and sports. We will also participate in an academic exchange with students and faculty from the University of Botswana, the country's leading university.

This blog is designed to provide you with a way of following along with us on our trip. We hope that it will also serve as our way of sharing some of our experiences with you!
